Turin is flat, compact and gridded, so walking and cycling work well. For everything else there is GTT — buses, trams and a driverless metro running from Collegno in the west through Porta Susa and Porta Nuova down to Lingotto.
Start here: Piemove makes the annual pass free
If you are under 26 and enrolled at Politecnico, the Region of Piedmont gives you a free annual public transport pass. Most international students never hear about this and spend a few hundred euros they did not need to.
- Who qualifies: under 26, enrolled at PoliTo (or UniTo or Università del Piemonte Orientale) on a bachelor’s, master’s or PhD programme, with an ISEE up to €85,000 — a threshold high enough that most students clear it.
- What it covers: all urban GTT services in Turin, the suburban network, and rail between stations inside the city, including the Grugliasco and Venaria links. Valid through the summer too.
- How to get it: log in at
bip.piemonte.itand choose the free under-26 student travel pass. If you hold a BIP card, load it through the BIP Piemonte app; if not, request one online and it arrives pre-loaded. For 2025/26 it can be loaded straight onto your Politecnico student card. - Keep it alive: requirements are re-checked automatically every six months, and you must validate at least 60 journeys a year — tap in even when nobody is checking.
If you are 26 or over
Buy the GTT under-26 pass’s grown-up equivalent, or pay per ride:
- City ticket: €1.90 bought digitally in the GTT app, €2.00 on paper. Valid 100 minutes on buses and trams, including one metro journey.
- Contactless: tap a debit or credit card at metro gates and on newer buses — no ticket needed.
- Annual passes for young adults start at €258, with reduced bands from €158 depending on ISEE.
Always validate. An unvalidated ticket counts as no ticket, and inspectors are frequent on the metro.
Getting in from the airport
Turin Airport (Caselle, TRN)
- Train — about €3.70, roughly 30 minutes to Porta Susa, departures around every 30 minutes. The cheapest option by far.
- Arriva bus — €7.50 one way, €11 return, every 15–30 minutes, stopping at Porta Susa and Porta Nuova. Better if you have heavy luggage or land late.
Milan Malpensa (MXP) — direct coaches run to Porta Susa in roughly two hours for about €20–25. Book online in advance; fares vary by operator and time of day.
Nights, bikes and scooters
- Night Buster runs night lines on Fridays, Saturdays and evenings before public holidays, roughly 00:30–04:30. Your normal pass is valid.
- Bike sharing — [TO]Bike, the old station-based city scheme, shut down in February 2023 and has not been replaced like-for-like. What runs today is free-floating and app-based (RideMovi, Dott, Lime, Cooltra): unlock and leave the bike anywhere inside the service area, paying by the minute rather than on a student season ticket.
- E-scooters from several rental apps are all over the centre. They are banned from pedestrian zones, and Italian rules on helmets, age and lights have tightened — check the current rules before your first ride, because fines are enforced.

GTT TO Move for tickets and live times, Moovit or Google Maps for routing, and BIP Piemonte to hold your Piemove pass.
