The Codice Fiscale is your Italian tax code: sixteen letters and numbers built from your name, date and place of birth. Nothing else works without it.
You need it to enrol at Politecnico, apply for your Permesso di Soggiorno, open a bank account, sign a tenancy agreement, receive a scholarship payment, get a phone contract, and register with the health service. Get it in your first week.
The easiest route: the PoliTo Immigration Desk
Politecnico issues fiscal codes on campus, free of charge. This is far simpler than going to the tax office yourself.
- Where: Immigration Desk, ground floor, Corso Castelfidardo 39 (Cittadella Politecnica)
- When: Mondays, 09:30–11:00, by appointment. Extra slots open in September, October and February — the busy arrival months.
- Booking: through the Booking Tool on the PoliTo Teaching Portal
- Bring: the completed application form (downloadable from the PoliTo website), your passport or national ID plus a photocopy, and — for non-EU students — your visa plus a photocopy
The code is issued during the appointment. There is no fee.
The alternatives
- Before you leave home: the Italian Embassy or Consulate that issued your visa can also issue the fiscal code. If you can get it there, do — you will arrive already holding it.
- Agenzia delle Entrate: the Italian Revenue Agency issues fiscal codes at its Turin offices. Only worth it if you miss the campus slots.
A warning about the code you can “calculate”
Websites will generate a fiscal code from your personal details, and the result often matches the real one. Do not rely on it. Only a code actually registered with the Agenzia delle Entrate is valid — banks, the Questura and the health service all check against the register. A calculated code that was never registered will be rejected, and homonyms are resolved by the agency in ways a calculator cannot predict.
